General Information
- Type theory is the work of Carl Gustav Jung. The MBTI instrument is the work of Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs.
- MBTI is a way to determine healthy personality differences and not psychological disorders or fixed traits.
- All types are valuable – none is superior.
- Type does not measure competence, excellence or natural ability.
- Type does not imply that people with the same type behave in the same way – there are many other considerations such as environment and social conditioning that influence a person’s behaviour.
- People sometimes act in ways that are contrary to their type preferences, often when under pressure.
Our Myers-Briggs Practitioners
- Only administer the MBTI to respondents who have agreed to take part on a voluntary basis.
- Insist that the results are not used to label, evaluate or limit the respondent.
- Ensure that type results are confidential – results will not be shared without the respondent’s permission.
- Explain the purpose of the MBTI prior to the respondent completing the questionnaire, and how the results will be used.
- Explain to respondents that there are no right or wrong answers.
- Score the MBTI in accordance with the guidelines in the most current edition of the MBTI Manual.
Q&A...
What do you mean by preferences?
Take a pen in your normal, preferred writing hand and write your signature on a piece of paper. Notice how it feels to do this. Easy? Unconscious? Don't need to think about it? Now take the pen in the other hand and try it again. Chances are, you can do it, but it won't flow so well. It won't feel as natural.
Myers-Briggs Personality Type is about finding your preferences in 4 different scenarios:
- How you get your energy
- How you take in information
- How you make decisions
- How you plan the world around you
In each scenario, you will be presented with 2 choices. One will be your preference (your most natural way of doing things) and the other one will be something you can do, but which perhaps takes a little more effort.
Once you have decided on your preference in each area, your 4 choices will make up your personality type.
What can you use it for?
Understanding your type can help you:
- In your own personal development
- To resolve conflicts in your team
- With public speaking
- To coach and manage others
- To motivate your team to greater levels of production
- To manage stress!
It's about preferences, not competence so it won't help with recruitment decisions (or finding the perfect partner!). It will give you a deeper understanding of yourself and others around you, improve the effectiveness of your communication and help you become a better manager.
How many personality types are there?
There are 16 different personality types, all with their own gifts and all with their own blind spots. By knowing your type, you will begin to understand why you prefer some aspects of your job but climb the walls in others.
Once you know other peoples' types, you'll begin to understand why you gel with some people and find others harder to communicate with. Better still, you'll see how you can make simple changes to how you communicate, to get better results, with people who are not like you.
We are committed to helping you achieve more than you ever thought possible - both personally and professionally.
